All Garmin 16 units we used were supplier configured to be plug and play for both Greenstar and Farmworks stuff. We just plugged them and they played, no problems. Our units were all Db9 serial connector, not USB. Garmin does provide free download of latest Garmin 16 firmware along with a laptop or PC utility for reflashing update firmware and configuring Garmin 16. We've never had to do either so can't say if Garmin downloads are user friendly. Here is link to Garmin support page for those free Garmin 16 firmware and reflash utility downloads:
