Subject: Tale of Two Corn Fields

Grabill, Indiana

A neighbor and I planted corn on the same day in fields about 1/2 apart. We are starting to get dry and these two fields are starting to show differences in their response to the heat and dryness. Both fields were soybeans last year and were planted on June 4

The neighbor's field had 6,000 gallons of hog manure (from a pit) applied then the ground was field cultivated twice.  The corn in this field started rolling yesterday and is doing so again today.

My field was planted with 1.5 bushel of Cereal Rye last winter. The rye was burned down in mid May and the corn was planted using a planter with the Martin system. We applied 100 # of Phosphate, 100# Potash, and 10# sulfur and sidedressed 145# N as 28% UAN.  The corn leaves are still open, except for the driveway where the corn is rolling.

I know this isn't a fair comparison since they are different fields, but it will be interesting to see how both fields react as the forecast has no rain in it for the next week.

Jim
