nw NC | About 12 years ago , a friend lost a pole shed and most equipment in it from a lightning strike . No lightning rods . Passerby saw the bolt strike the roofing and in seconds every sheathing board and rafter in the building was burning . Must have been that every nail in the pine wood instantly became red hot and ignited the dry pine wood. Burned to the ground in spite of pouring rain and fire dept. on scene in 8-10 minutes. Lightning rods may have prevented it ...????? We have them on our gambrel roof hay and freestall dairy barn and silos but not our pole sheds .Tall trees and power lines /poles and silos should take the strikes . I have rod on my house , but once a bolt hit the ground in my backyard just over the septic tank. It blew out a hole in the soil larger than a basketball. Telephone man said he saw a hole in the ground the size of a pick-up truck cab blown out by lightning. Soil and turf scattered a long distance away. | |
