I thought I heard on the RRFN that up in ND within the last two years that June planted beets dug in late October yielded 20 tons. Isn't 20 tons a decent crop?

My question is why are beets grown where they are? Do the require a special soil condition? I've heard they will handle alkaline soils. We got plenty of that.
