We have had etrade brokerage accounts for years. You can do almost anything with them. You can buy stocks, buy bonds, buy cd's, buy funds, etc For anybody that wants to take control of their own investments there is not a better way to do it. I can not comment on Ameritrade but I imagine both are similiar.
