I don't think we are heading down the wrong path. You say the Deere Brown box is all we need. Well, that's kind of like saying some 100 years ago or so when the first tractor got built, that the old horse is all we need. If that was all we needed we would still be farmin with horses. Many different tractors have been built and many got abandonned, but overall there were huge. improvements made with tractors. I think it's the same with some of these new"tools" on the tractors. Some will evolve and become the norm, and some we may just forget about.
