Oregon
We just went through this debate. Two of us did a lot of plumbing. All the joints done by one person leaked. A lot. All of the joints done by the other person remain dry.

This is the trick that worked for us.

The dope on the joints that leaked was applied in the way one would apply ABS primer and cement- it was just slopped on. Heavy. Those joints leaked.

The dope on the joints that did not leak was carefully worked into the male threads with the brush. Not a lot of dope, but complete, even coverage worked down into the threads.

My theory is that the dope that was slopped on was just pushed on forward as the fitting was threaded together- so it really only hit the first few threads and then slopped all over. The dope that was worked into the male threads stayed there as the fittings were assembled.

This is only my experience- but when dope failed for us, it was because was poorly applied.
