Lenawee Co Michigan | That's newer than I thought it might be then.
There was something similar about two blocks away where a 3 story downtown hotel next to a 3 story merchants building was torn down. In large white hand painted letters, about 20' up, were the words "WELCOME HOME." This couldn't be seen before the hotel was demolished. No one could explain the sign until months later an old photo of the downtown area came up. The "WELCOME HOME" was for the returning Civil War soldiers!
So the merchants building was built before the civil war, and the hotel afterwards. | |
