Generator problem on antique tractor

Take the cover off the voltage regulator. You should see two contacts. One should be open and the other should be closed. The closed one will be your voltage regulator and the open one will be the cutout relay. Start the engine and ensure that the generator is charging like you observed earlier. Based on what you described in your first post, you should see both contacts closed at idle. Now rev up the engine. You will probably see the other contactor start to “chatter.” Most voltage regulators have some sort of adjustable spring mechanism that holds the contact closed. Try to determine what type of adjustment needs to be made in order to increase the closing force on the voltage regulating contactor. Usually, it is a screw adjustment that increases the spring force that keeps the contactor closed.
