Wyoming

I can't speak to how much you get there.

Here's what we get when we pasture sheep on our fields:

$0.05/head/day is average, if the pasture is really good and I supply water, $0.06/head/day. The better sheepmen will use a hot wire on irrigated ground and move the flock every day, so there is no waste and no over-grazing. Most sheepmen will supply a herder with their own trailer, etc installed on our fields.

Lambs that are born in the spring here and are sold for slaughter between 100 and 110 lbs in the fall bring about $0.90 to $1.10/lb.

Ewes can bring anywhere from $0.40 to $0.60/lb if they're worn out and going for slaughter. If you're looking at productive ewes, then you're going to be looking at a bunch more money, especially if they have genetics you want.

Breeding rams with very good genetics (eg, the Rafter-7 bucks out of the UNR sheep improvement program) can go for as much as $2500 to $3000 each. Utility bucks - might be $800 to $1200 per. Most operators are running one buck to 40 to 50 ewes.

Most productive sheepmen here in Nevada are running white-faced sheep -- Ramboulliet, Merino, Columbia or a cross of all three. The Merino have the finest wool, followed by the Ramb's. Ramb/Merino/cross wool often fetches $8+ per fleece if it has good staple length.

Black-faced sheep pack on the weight faster, but they don't twin as much, and their wool is nearly worthless here in Nevada - maybe $1.50 to $2.00. You might as well use Suffolk wool to fill pivot tire tracks. It costs more to shear them than you get for the fleece, after transportation.
