Subject: Google earth elevations

ECIN
After tracing some existing tile lines today on Google earth, for the first time I noticed that when you right click on the saved line, you can choose "Show Elevation Profile" and see the profile of the line. It appeared to be fairly accurate when checking some places with familiar topograpy.

Does anyone know where this elevation data comes from?

Also, is there a way to convert a .kml or .kmz file to a shapfile format to use as a field boundary?
