The closer you are to the base, the better.  We run 8 row 40" row crop equipment and our philosophy has been our operator should be able to visually see a stand-alone RTK base station while he works.  This is especially true when listing rows or planting.  We have rent farms all over our valley with some 30 miles distance between some.  We use AutoFarm two-antenna bases that are not too expensive.  Every farm we run has two galvanized poles cemented into the ground about 25' apart each with a 5/8" threaded bolts or nut welded on top (i.e. one male and one female) so the gps and 900Mhz antennas can be screwed down precisely in the same place at each farm.  The pole with the mushroom choke-ring GPS antenna is basically a permanent benchmark for that farm.  No portable tripods needed.  We have inserted threaded studs into our gps antennas and since one pole has male threads and one has female the antennas can never be reversed.  If we had a single-mount A5 portable base station it would be even simpler and only require one pole.  The operator basically sets up the station when commencing work and at the end of the day takes it down.  The 6db pole antenna is placed in a shotgun case and all other components and battery fit into a wheeled Pelican weatherproof case.  Same idea used when we set up our laser levels each day when preparing land.  Since many of our fields are within the boundaries of a major metropolitan center this also elimniates problems with theft and vandalism with respect to the bases.  Most importantly, if you are close enough to see the base station you eliminate many variables and accordingly your precision is as high as possible.
