Subject: RE: 1680 PTO clutch

Somerville, Indiana
different applications in different areas can cause problems comparing what to do. We have had way too many experiences with PTO clutch discs. We pull the clutch section only, doesn't take long, some sort of autocrane is a great help, can operate from inside the engine box. Reason for failure=down corn plugging rotor by piling on the corn head and feeding through all at once here. We know when it is coming. Slow to engage at first, drain PTO oil-it has clutch grindings-change oil and filter will last a while longer. Discs finally become distorted and lock up usually, can't shut off the machine with engine running. Pull the PTO housing out the top. repair and reinstall. Be sure the afore mentioned shaft is A OK, it is expensive, costs more than a reman PTO housing with the shaft in it. parts yards are no strangers to PTOs, but we have found it best to visit at the time of purchase-break the unit down before installation to be sure no parts need replaced. It has become almost a habit here to replace the PTO section. Much too easy for tired operator to engage the PTO before unpinning the concave to let it drop down on the auger bed. also much of the problem lies in that engaging the PTO a couple times after slugging the machine usually clears the rotor...Disadvantage is there are only so many times that the clutch discs will take the abuse. We really admire those who have hyd drive for the rotor.

We are very fortunate to have a mechanic nearby who can do all that we are not knowledgeable about. With costs the way they are now I can't see how one could operate without a good relationship with a very experienced mechanic.
