Subject: Re: CIH 1063 cornhead bearing question

We have machined some of the old rolls out to put in the water pump bearings, but the spiral on the end gets a little thin doing this. Don't know if this will be problem long term, with breakage. Not enough experience in that area as of yet. Water pump style spirals are bigger diameter to give more material around bearing. On my own 1063, I purchased bronze bushings to fit the spirals, cut out the needle bearings and installed them. Still have to grease them once or twice a day like needle bearings, but my only cost was for the bushings. Reused the old front support, just had to smooth them up a little on the grinder to fit the bushing. I also bought hardened steel washers to weld on the front bearing support to take out some wear there, and eliminate most of the gap I had.
