Subject: Re: RTK Base and Solar Power

Brisbane, Australia
We now have 3 bases running off solar panels. They are MS750 bases with 25 watt VHF data radios. We use 3 x 130 watt panels charging a single (very big sucker and damn it's too heavy for 2 sober blokes to lift one end of....) 450amp hour sealed lead acid battery. Fully charged this will last nearly 10 days of heavy cloudy weather in winter - no sun. Now, if you are only running the Trimble 900 MHz spread spectrum radios I would guess it would last 3 weeks or more as these VHF radios draw 3 - 4 amps every transmission (about 120 milliseconds long) - much more than the 900 MHz radio does.
