Breakage of closing wheel springs is pretty common on the 60/90-series. JD went to an additional wrap of wire on that torsion spring to help alleviate the problem.
I think the breakage is primarily due to bounce of the heavy OEM closing wheel. Faster operating speeds cause more bounce.
