Mississippi | I mean no disrespect to anyone, but there is sometimes a "cotton mentality" in the Deep South amongst some people. A noted ag economist used that term one time to explain the kind of thinking landlords and farmers sometimes have. You've got to plant cotton because you're a cotton farmer, the reasoning goes. Or, this is cotton land, so the tenant has to grow cotton.
I can think of one example in the Delta where an older, large farmer simply would not go to corn on some acres, even though the nematodes were past the point of reason. He had a lifetime in cotton, plus owned a gin, and found it was easier to retire. The guy who rented it was on cash rent (I assume) and put corn on most of it the next year.
So, even with the numbers swinging in your favor, you've got this institutional and cultural thing to overcome. | |
