Last year HOIC charged 3.9 cents per point removed for drying. And 1.4% shrink per point removed. At $4 corn, 1.4% is 5.6 cents, total 9.5 cents.

Drying on the farm costs fuel, and you will have at least 1.18% shrink. 1.18% shrink is the weight of the water removed to reduce the moisture 1 point. It takes heat energy and air to dry corn, you have to convince the grain to give up the moisture and remove it from the bin. Too deep and you cut the dryer performance. There is much detail in the Midwest Plans Service grain drying handbook, including the economics.

If the farm size spreads the equipment cost over enough bushels, on farm corn drying should be profitable, like on farm storage where it eliminates harvest season waits at the elevator and allows delivery of corn at a better market price than at harvest. You won't ever handle the grain without more than 1.18% shrink because of spills and grain grinding in augers and dryers.
