Near-north Ontario, French River
I've been told that if your revs drops 10% for any extended amount of time that you should downshift. So if you are running comfortably a t 2100 rpm in 9th, you should be ok down to 1900rpm or so in 10th. Not sure what the reasoning is behind the 10% drop, nor do I have hard data that thats the number to use( its just what Ive been told ) but it seems reasonable to me anyway.FWIW gearing up and throttling down seems to be more tailored to lower draft type jobs like mowing/spraying/planting where there is generally an excess of HP to begin with, it will work with higher draft jobs like tillage but seems to be much less advantageous because often times HP requirements are often near the limits of the tractor to begin with.
