I thought it sounded like a bad u-joint, but why would the clunk stop when it's in the high range? That seems to rule out a problem anywhere but in the gearcase. ?
The cylinder bearing has a slight amount of movement when I lift it, so it will get replaced, but I don't think it's the problem.
