One other very important factor that no one is addressing here is the N that is obtained from the soil during the growing season through organic matter mineralization and decomposing crop residues. 


I think that is where GeraldG got his 170 bu. by applying app. 111 Units ?

and this is what hay is capitalizing on with a well managed crop rotation program.

You are correct for pointing out also the Importance of Building and maintaining soil Organic matter and soil Health for the organic feeding of the plant
