| These critters can be a problem. They can girdle the plant, completely killing it in the early growth stages, or can weaken the main stem, causing lodging at harvest. Later feeding is usually confined to petioles.
Although we don't have any thresholds for our state, thresholds have been developed in MS. When beans are less than 10 inches tall, their threshold is 1 threecorned alfalfa hopper (TCAH)/sweep. From research, they have determined that if TCAH is only a pest during reproductive growth at very high densities or from long duration infestations. We have some insecticide screening results from last year. In one test, lodging measured at harvest was significantly reduced with a pyrethroid application in mid-July (Mustang Max was the only one in this test). I would suggest using the MS threshold as a guide to see if a treatment is worthwhile. If your beans are producing pods, they might be out of the woods, even with increasing TCAH numbers. | |
