Brazilton KS | I used to be part of the "stick is better then MIG for things that really matter" camp.
Eventually I learned.
I'll weld two piece of 2" plate together with the MIG and challenge anyone who wants to "do it better" with a stick. "can't weld thick stuff with MIG" is bullstuff.
I'll weld 3/4" plate with one pass on each side with the MIG and you can cut the weld and look for "lack of penetration" if you like. If I can bevel it a little, I"ll do it with 1 1/2"
The only time our stick welder gets used in the shop is when we have a very small stainless or hardfacing job to do, which does not justify changing one of the MIGs over. Right now, we have one MIG constantly loaded with stainless, so that's not even happening at the moment. I do use stick quite a bit in the field, when necessary. Seems like it's getting to where either I or my brother have to do it, though....other brother can't see at two different distances in the same glasses, and all these young'uns don't seem to know how a stick welder works.
I'm not qualified to weld anything, but I've sure done it a lot. | |
