Folks house has wood shakes put on in late 30's last 50+ years. Put on new ones didn't last 10 years. Now have a metal roof for last 10 years and like it. Only thing they had to change was put ice dams on roof as entire roof surface area would slide off at once and take out gutters and lower story porch roof.
