Subject: Cultivators and Soil Biology

Schomberg, Ontario, Canada
I was at a seminar on soil biology, and the guy hosting the seminar was a non-believer in using a cultivator. He said that it pulls residue that has not decomposed up, and on top, and therefore that residue cannot feed the soil biology down below. I can see where he is coming from, but I can't see not using the cultivator for at least one pass in the spring, depending upon soil type. In light soil, I could see using a heavy harrowgator followed by a light harrow and then seeding. In my organic operation, the culitvator sure is nice for some weeds. Any thoughts??
