Manchester, IA | I grew up about 5 miles from the Francis Childs farm.
His wife is farming her half of the farm.
The other half got sold after Franis death.
Local story pretty much goes like Gerald J said, He had three wagons
that all look alike one was weighted....Lead shotgun shot in tires and frame
I have been told. He'd pull a light wagon to town to get a empty weight with the pickup,
come home and pull the wagon beside the other ones, then hook the tractor to the weighted
one...fill it and pull it to town weigh it and bring the corn home and unload it.
It all most sounds too simple to be true...you would have thought the judges would have
made him unload the corn at the elavator....like I said this is the local rumor.
Francis was always quiet and humble as a church mouse...but sneaky like a fox.
I have fond memories of the "CORN KING" may he rest in peace. | |
