I added this to my last post as an edit but It is worthy enough to post it as a reply in case someone misses it:

 The day I took this picture, I collected tissue samples from the left and to the far right.  corn on alfalfa had 4.21% N -sufficient and corn on corn had 4.44 % N - sufficient. 

Sulfer tested .24 -sufficient following spring kill alfalfa and the corn on corn tested .29-high I wish I would have sampled some from the 4 row area, but I did not.  I think the soil temperature is the main detriment here

I think I'll just scan the tissue tests and post them in a little bit.

The last test is a cornstalk nitrate test from 08.  the last of those three samples is from this spot in these pictures where no nitrogen or manure was applied following the alfalfa. the middle of the three nitrate tests shows where manure was applied.  This is what led me to try more corn after alfalfa with no manure or nitrogen.
