Old Cat guy here used to form a piece of strap iron around a D8 track spring, compress it in a press & weld the strap around the spring. Then cut the strap w/a torch after it was in place in the tractor...I never witnessed this personally, never really wanted to...he wasn't exactly known for being safe.
