Subject: RE: Deere engine swap

for the answers to your questions you need to talk to john shur in westport in.phone 812-591 2144.he has made it a business for this kind of swap.there is some minor machine work involved with a late 404d to early gas modle.i have done 2. one a pr shift and a syncro both have proven to be a big improvement.john will sell you the engine ready to set in.you will have to do some modifications if you go with the later 404 combine engine or he probably has an older take out 404 that will set rite in.flywheel ringgear and starter are for sure different.for better starting get a gear reduction starter stay with the 12 volt much easier starting.i would recommend you get the radiator checked out as the newer 404s have more hp than the origonal rad. can handle if you do some heavy work. makes a whole new tractor tho.
