McCartman - I have always wondered why they will not allow two different heat sources to use the same chimney. Can anyone provide a sensible explanation - or is this just the gubbermint and insurance companies screwing with people?
I was taught the gas appliance exhaust would dry out the mortar in the chimney, providing hot embers from a solid fuel appliance to escape.

I spent quite a few years learning the fuel gas code (which by the way has been changed enough the last 3 years I don't guarantee I know anything).  For all the mumbo jumbo and legalese involved, there was generally a good reason behind everything in there. Sometimes you had to ponder a bit before you understood, but it was there if you thought about it.
