I have never actually picked when it was cold enough to need anything other than the oil based spindle cleaner that I normally use. But when it gets really cold, I have always bought a barrel of methanol and added it to the tank when the water level was low right before I quit for the night. Add five or ten gallons and then pick another two or three rounds to be sure it circulates all through the system.
