You can pick without water but it will wear your moisture pads out quick and is generally not good BUT can be done in a pinch. In 2006 a buddy of mine had to pick from midnight until 4 or 5 am every night when the ground froze. It was a 9960 JD and he just pulled the belt off the pump and let her eat!
