It took me a while to figure out those pitless adaptors too. Still haven't seen a real one, everything is old-school around here. Real old school. Dad wouldn'ta believed in such a new-fangled thing.....
The adaptor is a slide-together pipe junction. A good tug up will disconnect it. A good push down will seat it. The little bitty O-ring seals it.
It's kinda like putting a slip-joint in the middle of a 90 degree elbow. But the elbow slides apart in 2 pieces.
