Subject: Sprayer Operator Pay

SW Missouri
Got into a chat this evening with a neighbor about maybe buying a self-propelled sprayer together. The biggest hurdle so far is finding the right person to operate it. We both are capable but don't have time. One thought is to pay a per acre charge to the operator($2 an acre?) to motivate him to get it done and try and pick up extra acres to help pay for the sprayer. The two of us together would average around 5000 acres a year in a corn/bean rotation. We also think it would be fairly easy to pick up that many acres of custom work in the close area. Of coarse that gets into a whole nother issue with liability, insurance and everything. Whats your thoughts? What is a good operator worth?TIA.
