In the past, one of the reasons for higher populations was for increased weed control. Main reason I switched to drilled beans in 1978 from 36" rows was to help on weed control. With today's chemicals it's easier to control weeds in thinner stands than what it use to be.

One problem with decreasing populations is if you'r on the low end of the population range is if you less margin for error if you have germination problems.
