Amen to the good observation. "here" "this year" on our lighter soils 8-12 CEC with above average rainfall during the growing season....(in excess of 25" from May 1 to black layer) we were achieving comparable yields with lower N rates. If I would apply 200 units N on corn fields following soybeans I don't think I would be back again on that farm.
Following are some of my typical rates for my customers with no recent manure history on their fields.
150 units 30% broadcast immediately following planting with herbicide. Agrotain is added to "hopefully" protect N until we have a half inch of rain to incoperate the N.
I have some guys doing a split application of N that are as low as 130 units.
Now if you throw in a good cover crop program and a little bit of manure then the N rates REALLY drop. Oh well that is here not there.
Maybe those Beck or Agrigold guys will read this thread and have some plots next year with better checks.
