Ethridge, TN
What usually happens, is that there is a plug in the lower gudgeon that drives the vertical. That plug will break loose, and then the vertical auger will drop down. When it drops, it will usually take the splines out of the gudgeon that is in the top of that auger, cause you don't have near the amount of surface now driving the gearbox and the horizontal auger. The auger will start by plugging, as they slowly get out of time, till they eventually lock up.

You can check this by seeing if you can raise the vertical auger up and down, and if it is setting down on the lower casting. If it is, then you'll have to remove the bottom drive to get the vertical out. Tailings elevator has to come off to get this done. If you have to take this apart, make sure you check out the bearings in that bottom drive real well. I'd also pull the top gearbox and check it over good. Usually, when this failure happens, it'll also mess up the splines on the top box. Plus look the splines over good in the end of your horizontal auger.
