A rotor can make all the difference in the world. Find one with the newer AGCO rotor used in the 9690/9790 machines or even current production models, and it will be better suited to lots of damp straw. A St. Johns rotor works well in small grains also in an 8780. Those would be the first dollars I would spend on an 8780 to make it better equipped to handle your conditions. When that's done, yes, they are a good combine for your crops.
