Subject: Re: oats - fertility requirements

St. Gregor, SK, Canada
We find 75 - 80lbs/ac N will do the trick. Then, 10lbs of N from the ammonium sulfate, plus the N in 25lbs of phos. Oats needs 1lb of available soil N for every bushel of seed it produces. Plan on spraying tilt, or some other fungicide for tanspot. We had to do it twice.

I hate growing it because of the MASS. Boy does the combine tank ever fill up fast. Not to mention all that straw to deal with - plan on baling some of it if it grows anywhere near what it does here, and you no-till. We had Furlong last year, did well over 100, straw got up to my chest (I'm 6' 2").

Don't like it much, but we may end up seeding some as I've still got last year's seed here. Straw makes good organic matter but does not break down quickly - takes almost three years before it's all gone.
