| Cows make money for me. Always have. But I see what you are getting at and my economics are different from what you quoted. I bought my main herd in 1985. Paid anywhere from $360 to $425 a cow. Used a fair amount of my own money thanks to a good confectionary sunflower crop that year. Got investment tax credit too. (Last year for that). Owned some pasture (was making payments at the time), rented another pasture from the state school lands trust for $2.25 an acre.
To get to the point, if a person gets in at the right time and gets everything paid for, including your pasture, or you find cheap rent, things work out. Bottom line on cows for me is they are as good as sheep, but I consider sheep to be the better of the two because I don't have near the land tied up with white woolies. But yea, you are right. If a person is starting out right now, you had better have deep pockets or an understanding banker because cows are going to take some patience and determination to make them pay. | |
