Central Kansas | Lilacs and ash trees are very susceptible to borers. On lilacs...with multiple stems from the crown...often will show borer damage with only a few of the stems dying back. Lindane was powerful medicine for borers....but I think it is now off the market for one of the usual reasons effective herbicides and insecticides are deceased (like Deldrin and Chlordane).
With the rampant die back of ash trees due to borers in the US...there should be some insecticide that is effective against borers. Don't know for sure if your lilac is borer damaged....but a preventative application would eliminate that as a causative agent. | |
