Agree with Hoover Dam.We took the tour down below, and was amazed at what is actually in the bottom. Could also drive to Grand Canyon, but that takes ALL day.We enjoyed just riding out in the desert, and loved the old ghost town of Oakmont Arizona, about two hours south of Vegas. Wild burros freely roam the sidewalks. Not too touristry, and not expensive.Gun fights are staged on the main street, which is Route 66. Gold mine close to there also. There are several National Parks within an hour or so drive, all excellent. We really liked the Red Rock Park scenery, just north of town. You can drive into the NASCAR track, right along side of Interstate. We once ventured up to Area 51,known as THE EXTRATERRESTIAL HIGHWAY, where the Government has the hidden UFO's. Nothing to really see. I have always enjoyed the many pawn shops in town, they always have neat stuff, as do the thrift shops. People get broke and sell stuff.
The shows are wonderful, and there are many off the strip that feature lesser acts, but are much cheaper.
To discuss eating places would take forever. We have found that the best places seem to be the smaller,non-hotel places. Most of the large hotel "BIG NAME" eateries are over priced. The exception to that is the Stratosphere, where you have an excellent meal at the top of the revolving restaurant, some 1000 feet in the air. To dine there above it all at sunset is spectacular, and not too costly.
You can go to Vegas, have a great time on not much money, or you can visit, come home broke, and disgusted. Do not get caught up in all the glitter, but be sure and walk the Strip at night.
