Little River, TX | I do not like to plant alfalfa on short notice. I prefere to start planning at least a year in advance.

I would hope that you will have a 5 year annual roll over lease agreement for any farm that you plant alfalfa on.
It is fairly common to plant alfalfa following wheat. Personally I prefere to plant following a summer fallow. It is during this fallow period the fertilizer is applied, weeds are controlled, the land made smooth and any surface drainage problems addressed.
I like to recharge the deep moisture. Moisture loss through summer fallow is about a third of that lost through a crop or weeds.
My climate is different and I expect my soil type is also. | |
