Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn. | I hooked up a PF3000 (Advantage would behave the same) to my GPS simulator and logged a simulated tillage operation with GGA and VTG ON and other messages OFF.
The screen display was as predicted with the arrow showing the proper direction of travel as a path was painted for the operation.
I then purposely turned off the VTG message but left the GGA message ON. The screen display showed the path as before but the arrow always pointed UP or North. I am now very certain that your VTG message must be set to OFF. If the GPS was used in a different application (backpack as you mention), the device getting GPS may not have needed or allowed the VTG message.
You need to find a way to change the setup on the GPS. This will be a one time change since it stays set. This will require a PC and the appropriate software to change the value from OFF to ON.
