I had the same problem in wheat harvest this year on my JD 9750. THe dealer told me that the sensor had gone bad. It was a lot cheaper to change my setup to the cable that "t's" into the existing JD header height sensor. Problem is, I'm not sure if the 9600 has that sensor. It's on the back of the feederhouse on the left side at the bottom if it does have it.
