On the excess sprouts ,It will help if you never use phosphorus fertilizer.Only fert in the spring also.Or never.Some trees have a very different genetic code as far as growth and limb angles.Some growers like an open center and side angled branches.I do not trim that way(except peach)and try to keep tree more central leader ish.This can get a bit out of whack if the leader gets broken,cut etc,then you just extend a branch as the next leader .There are spur type trees that need very little shaping as they bud on vertical leaders.Trying to get these to an open center would be very wrong.Only prune dec to June. here.It will be different there.
