Wild & Wonderfull WV | I am a believer in the advantages of a cover crop and seeded all but 40 acres last year. But here is my problem. I have farmed some of the ground since 1978 and in that time frame have only had 2 or 3 "dry" springs. It is usually a challenge to try to get the ground dry enough to plant timely. With a lush cover crop this delays things even more. We had a extremely wet spring this year. I had one afternoon in April where I found some ridges barely dry enough to plant. I waited till May 22 till I was able to get back in and planted for 3 days and promptly got 6.5 " of rain in 5 days. It was June 18 th before I could get back in to finish planting the first time and replant 50% of what I planted in May. I know this year was the exception but I welcome having clean fall sprayed soybean residue to plant in.
Strip tillage would be a logical answer but it is too wet to do spring strips and I question if the cover crop has grown enough if I did strips in late fall.
Any suggestion? | |
