You get what you pay for. I was in the same spot as you about 6 years ago. Spend a little more and get a newer good head. You'll be glad you did. Not sure you need to upgrade to dial a matic, as long as the old header hieght control works. I'm not sure it matters what type of sickle, I've always had the JD 3in, but whatever you have it needs to be kept up and maintained.
