Subject: RE: Cheap RTK options

Alberta
We bought a Trimble base station, put it up on a 30 foot pole on high ground in rolling country with a couple 12V batteries and 3 solar panels to charge the batteries. Works fine unless the deer decide to chew on the battery charging cables. We buy older rtk unlocked fm1000 monitors, or ez 500 unlocked to RTK. Much cheaper than new unlocks or the yearly subscriptions most equipment has. We set up permanent cables in the equipment we want to use GPS in and just move monitors from one piece of equipment to another wherever we need it. All in, we are probably in for less $ in 1 base station, 2 repeaters, 2 radios, 2 unlocked fm1000, 1 unlocked 500 as well as 3 Nav2 controllers than the cost of 1 new RTK receiver and monitor in 1 piece of equipment. You don't need RTK to VR or for prescriptions, only need RTK steering for row planting work. The VR capability can be in the planter monitor and you can just pull the NMEA signal from the gps monitor. Sometimes it is easier and cheaper to use what comes with the planter and pull the signal from the gps, sometimes it is easier to use the gps monitor to control everything. We do whatever setup is the easiest and most economical.
