nw NC
I was in sixth grade. I think that someone came around to all class rooms and called teachers out into the hallway to tell them, as there was no intercom in the building. The teacher told us when she returned.

The teacher's husband was our county representative to the North Carolina legislature in Raleigh, N.C. He and she were staunch Democrats. When she announced the news, a boy, who stuttered when he spoke, said, "W-w-ell g-g-ood". (No doubt his parents and family were Republicans.) The teacher chewed him out right then. A short while later, the teacher, as a form of punishment to the boy who stuttered ( his name was Dean), told him to go to the teacher's lounge where there was a television and find out any updates. When he returned she asked him what he heard. Dean said, "H-h-he k-k-kicked the b-b-bucket".

I will always remember that.
